Compatibility Guide

Using the wrong pod in a device — or the wrong e-liquid in a pod — can result in leaking, poor flavor, burnt coils, or a device that simply won’t fire. Unlike universal phone chargers, vape pods and devices are brand-specific and often model-specific.

Each manufacturer designs their pods with proprietary connections, coil resistance, airflow paths, and e-liquid formulations optimized for their specific device. A pod from one brand will not physically fit a device from another brand (with rare exceptions).

This guide will help you understand the different system types, identify what’s compatible with your device, and avoid costly mistakes.

Before matching pods to devices, it helps to understand the three main categories of vape systems and how they handle compatibility differently.

Closed pod systems are the easiest to use but the most restrictive in terms of compatibility. The device (battery) is reusable, and you buy pre-filled pods that snap or magnetically attach to the battery.

Key compatibility rules:

– Pods are brand-specific — a pod from Brand A will not fit a device from Brand B
– Within a brand, pods are often model-specific — newer devices may use different pods than older models from the same brand
– Pre-filled pods come in set flavors and nicotine strengths — you can’t customize the e-liquid
– Pod connections vary: magnetic, snap-in, or friction-fit — each is unique to the device

Advantages: No mess, no refilling, consistent flavor, simple pod swaps.
Disadvantages: Limited flavor/nicotine options, higher cost per mL, locked into one brand’s ecosystem.

Open pod systems give you the flexibility to fill your own e-liquid into a refillable pod or tank. This opens up hundreds of flavor and nicotine strength options — but it also introduces more compatibility variables.

Key compatibility factors:

– Pod / tank fit: The pod must be designed for your specific device — refillable pods are still brand/model-specific
– Coil resistance: Pods contain a built-in coil (or accept replaceable coils) with a specific resistance (measured in ohms). The device must support that resistance range
– E-liquid type: Low-resistance coils (sub-ohm, below 1.0Ω) work best with freebase nicotine. Higher-resistance coils (1.0Ω+) work best with nicotine salt e-liquids
– VG/PG ratio: Thicker e-liquids (high VG) work better in sub-ohm devices with larger wicking ports. Thinner liquids (50/50 or high PG) are better for pod systems with smaller coils

One of the most common compatibility mistakes is using the wrong e-liquid type for the coil resistance. Here’s the rule:

Low resistance (sub-ohm) — 0.2Ω to 0.9Ω:

– Produces large clouds and warm vapor
– Best with freebase nicotine at 3mg–6mg
– Use high VG e-liquids (70VG/30PG or higher)
– Found in box mods, sub-ohm tanks, and some advanced pod mods

High resistance — 1.0Ω to 1.8Ω:

– Produces tighter draw, less vapor, cooler temperature
– Best with nicotine salts at 20mg–50mg
– Use 50/50 or high PG e-liquids
– Found in most pod systems and mouth-to-lung (MTL) devices

Why this matters: Using 50mg nic salt in a 0.3Ω sub-ohm coil would deliver a dangerously high dose of nicotine per puff. Conversely, using 3mg freebase in a 1.4Ω pod coil would produce almost no nicotine satisfaction. Match the coil to the liquid.

Avoid these frequent compatibility errors:

1. Buying the wrong generation pod: Many brands reuse names across generations (Novo 2 vs Novo 4, Caliburn G vs G3). The pods look similar but have different connections. Always check the exact model number.

2. Mixing nic salt and sub-ohm: High-strength nic salts (35–50mg) in a sub-ohm device deliver dangerously high nicotine doses. High-strength salts are designed for low-wattage pod systems only.

3. Using thick e-liquid in small pods: High VG (80/20 or Max VG) e-liquids are too thick for most pod system coils. They won’t wick properly, causing dry hits and burnt coils. Use 50/50 or 60/40 for pod systems.

4. Forcing pods into the wrong device: If a pod doesn’t click or seat smoothly, it’s not compatible. Never force a pod — you’ll damage the contacts or crack the pod, causing leaks.

5. Ignoring coil resistance: Devices support specific coil resistance ranges. Using a coil outside the device’s range can result in the device not firing or displaying an error.

Before buying replacement pods or a new device, follow these steps:

1. Know your exact device: Check the brand name and full model name/number printed on your device or its box. “SMOK Novo” isn’t enough — you need “SMOK Novo 4” or “SMOK Novo 5.”

2. Check the product listing: On vapekage.com, every pod listing states which devices it’s compatible with. Read the compatibility section in the product description carefully.

3. Match the coil: If your device uses replaceable coils, note the coil series (e.g., LP1, G-Series, XROS). Buy coils from the same series.

4. Match e-liquid to coil: Sub-ohm coil? Use freebase 3–6mg with high VG. Pod coil (1.0Ω+)? Use nic salt 20–50mg with 50/50.
